Activity Overview

Discovery Green is a fantastic public park located in the heart of the city of Houston, Texas. This nearly 12-acre park is a great place to spend the day with your family due to the wide variety of facilities and attractions it provides.

Discovery Green is known for its walking trails, dog runs, gardens, playground, and much more. There are also multiple performance venues in the park, including the Anheuser-Busch Stage and the Fondren Performance Space, which are often used for outdoor concerts in the summertime. Other attractions include the Hagstette Family Putting Green, Trini's Shuffleboard Court, Kinder Lake, and a number of fascinating pieces of public art.

Things to Do

  • Take young children under the age of 12 to the John P. McGovern Playground. It is designed with a theme that teaches children about the important bird migration route that passes over the city. Some of the play equipment features birds, and there are also signs that help to teach visitors young and old about the migratory route.
  • Enjoy a concert at one of Discovery Green's many performance venues, including the Anheuser-Busch Stage, the Fondren Performance Space, and the Transier Bandstand.
  • Try a new sport! Discovery Green has plenty of activities for you to discover with your friends and family, including shuffleboard and bocce.
  • Kids will love kayaking in Kinder Lake. They can also rent remote-controlled sailboats on weekends for use in the park's special Model Boat Basin, where they can race boats with new and old friends.

Discovery Green Insider Tips

  • Don't forget to check Discovery Green's events page to learn about special attractions at the park before your visit. Popular events include the ICE ice rink, the Discovery Green Flea monthly flea market, and the Scream on the Green Halloween celebration.
  • You don't have to play sports or attend a concert to enjoy the park - there's plenty to see if you just take advantage of its trails. Features include beautiful fountains and several works of public art, including the Synchronicity of Color installation that consists of giant colorfully-painted boxes.
  • If you get hungry, try one of Discover Green's two excellent restaurants. The Lake House sits on the shore of picturesque Kinder Lake and provides fast food such as tacos and hot dogs, while The Grove offers "modern Texas cuisine" such as steaks and seafood from its location by the Brown Foundation Promenade.
