Activity Overview

Create spinning tops out of plastic bottle caps. This is a fun craft that uses recycled bottle caps from milk jugs and other kind of bottles to make a fun toy that can occupy young minds for hours. Build one or many and decorate the sticks in colored patterns to suit your individual style. These tops are great fun to have spinning top battles with as an activity as well.

Children of all ages will enjoy playing with these spinning tops. Please remember to have an adult assist with creating the hole in the bottle cap to avoid injury from a sharp object or tool.

Materials Needed

  • Bottle caps
  • Toothpicks
  • Hot glue gun
  • Washi tape if desired
  • A Hammer
  • A Nail
  • An adult

How to Make and Play

  1. Have an adult assist with making a hole in the center of the bottle cap with a hammer and a nail. The hole needs to be large enough for a toothpick to be inserted through it and the hole needs to be directly in the center of the cap.
  2. After the hole is made, set the nail and hammer aside. You won't need them again unless you are making more than one top.
  3. Insert tooth pick or skewer through hole.
  4. Secure toothpick with your glue gun to create a good strong seal and the toothpick it straight.
  5. If desired, use washi tape to decorate the top end of your toothpick handle to make it your own.
