Activity Overview

The University of Texas Tower, also known as the Main Building, is the heart of the University of Texas at Austin. The 307-foot tall building is also one of the city's most important landmarks. It was constructed in the 1930s at the center of the university campus, with the tower originally used as a one-of-a-kind library space. While it is primarily used for administrative offices today, visitors can still visit the tower's observation deck in order to enjoy its spectacular views of downtown Austin, as well as explore the rest of the building..

Things to Do

  • Visit the observation deck of the tower in order to enjoy the magnificent views of Austin and the UT campus. You can find a schedule of tower tour times here.
  • Explore the Main Building and view its many impressive architectural features, including marble floors, outdoor terraces, exquisitely painted ceilings, portraits, and plaster busts of notable historical figures.
  • Attend one of the weekly carillon concerts held at the tower each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 12:50 p.m., and enjoy the beautiful sound of its bells ringing throughout campus.

University of Texas Tower Insider Tips

  • Tour reservations must be made in advance by either visiting or calling the Texas Union Hospitality Center. More information on ticket reservations can be found here.
  • Parking is available in the University Co-op parking garage at 23rd and San Antonio.
  • Make sure to leave all of your belongings in your car, since the tower has a strict policy prohibiting bags, purses, backpacks, umbrellas, strollers, food, and other items. If you plan to arrive on foot or using public transportation, you can check your items for $1.
  • Learn more about the tower's lighting for certain events by viewing their official brochure. It is often lit in orange and white for football victories, commencement, and other special occasions.
