Activity Overview

Experience a little bit of Science on your next snow day with The Volcano of Snow Experiment. Make sure that you have plenty of baking soda and vinegar which are the showcase ingredients in this chemical reaction. In my experience, the kids are going to want to repeat this fun child friendly experiment again and again.

When the baking soda and vinegar mix, Carbon Dioxide is released forming a fun foamy reaction which will flow over the snowy mountain that you have created, emulating molten lava. Let your next day in the snow erupt with Science fun and laughter.

Materials Needed

  • A cup or plastic bottle
  • Snow
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food coloring

How to Make One

  1. Create a small mountain of snow and carve out a hole in the top large enough to fit your cup or bottle.
  2. Place the cup in the hole and fill the cup half way with baking soda.
  3. In a separate container, mix your vinegar and food coloring together.
  4. When you are ready for the volcano to erupt, pour the vinegar and food coloring mixture into the cup and the foamy colored chemical reaction between the baking soda and the vinegar will bubble over and down the sides of the snow volcano.
