Bamboo Flooring - The Sustainable Alternative...

Bamboo flooring is an ideal choice for those of you who want to complement your home with the look of a natural hardwood floor, yet wish to retain an environmentally product. Bamboo flooring is extremely hard and durable, but care should still be taken as you would with a hardwood floor to prevent scratches and dents from abusive use.

There are basically three styles of bamboo to choose from:

  • Natural Bamboo Flooring sold in tongue and groove planks
  • Carbonized Bamboo Flooring which is somewhat darker in color
  • Strand Bamboo Flooring which is extremely hard

Since bamboo is harvested every 3 to 5 years it produces up to 25 times what a typical hardwood tree does in its 100 year lifespan. Along with that, bamboo continues to grow after being harvested so it is a very sustainable product.

The bamboo canes are cut into narrow strips and glued together similar to form the tongue and groove planks that we recognize in the store. As a result of the gluing process a small amount of formaldehyde glue is used in the manufacturing process and some outgassing of VOC's is to be expected. With some searching, you can find products that meet the European standards for safely and these will be VOC-free by the use of water based adhesives.

The flooring is ideal for any person to lay their own floor on a clean and level subfloor. I would recommend the Strand Bamboo Flooring as this is over twice as hard as the Natural Bamboo Flooring. A Floating Bamboo Floor is also an option which required no adhesives or fasteners when installed and because it comes in larger sheets, it spans imperfections in the floor and simply "clicks" together for a fantastic looking finished floor. This is typically a veneered product, also called engineered and is not solid bamboo .

While you are at it don't overlook the availability of bamboo and bamboo veneer products for your kitchen and bath cabinetry and wood trim around the house.

I've used the Strand Bamboo Flooring and love the look, comfort and performance of it and would highly recommend it anywhere you desire a hardwood floor.
