Natural Drain Cleaner Recipe: Safe & It Works

I have always found drain cleaners to be scary and toxic - I hate to have them around the house with the kids.  So when I happened across this natural drain cleaner recipe, I was thrilled.  This is one of many recipes out there - but the basics are just baking soda and vinegar - something everyone tends to already have around the house.  Note: this will not work on really horrible clogs, but it is a great tool for "regular maintenance" of your drains.  And the chemical reaction is fun too (and safe).

Drain Cleaner
1/2 cup baking soda
1/2 cup white vinegar
Boiling water

Pour baking soda down the drain. Add white vinegar and cover the drain, if possible. Let set for 5 minutes. Then pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain. (The vinegar and baking soda break down fatty acids into soap and glycerine, allowing the clog to wash down the drain.) Do not use this method if you have used a commercial drain opener and it may still be present in the drain.

This is also a GREAT maintenance solution. If you use this combination every other month, every six weeks, or what ever, you will always have free flowing drains. Besides it makes the drain smell fresh!

You can also use this for toilets.

I used this in our "new" 60 year old home that the water backed up in the upstairs (only) bathroom bolth the sink and the tub would fill quickly. The previous owners used draino..left it by the tub and obviously it did not work. I used this 2 times (I didnt cover the 1st time) it bubbleb up all kinds of nasty stuff Im geussing years of gooke! And after 3 months of showering with the tub filling it now drains quickly and the sink as well!! I will definatly be useing this methode to avoid ever haveing this problem again!

I love it! This is so easy and effective, and so much better than those expensive supposed drain cleaners. Thanks!!

This works GREAT! My shower drain was starting to cause the water to pool at my feet. We have a septic system and do not use harsh chemicals. I tried this baking soda and vinegar combo a couple of weeks ago. It worked PERFECTLY!!

Yes, this is good for maintenance and if you do it a couple of times in a row, it may also work on a clogged drain. I've used it with great success...
