Tips for Success Using the Atkins Diet

A few years ago, I gained a lot of weight after a pregnancy. I had just moved and was depressed and bored and instead of losing the baby weight, I gained a bunch of weight!  Finally, after trying a lot of different diets, I turned to the Atkins Diet to see if it would work for me. It did.  

I don't promote any one diet over another, but if you are trying the Atkins Diet, I have some tips that can hopefully help you to find success on your journey.  Losing weight isn't easy - I found Atkins to be easier than anything else I tried, but it still wasn't easy, especially not at first!  

Try some of these tips to keep you on track and losing weight! 

~ Plan, plan, plan. There is an old saying that says, "He who fails to plan, plans to fail."  This quote is so true to Atkins. Get foods that tempt you out of your house completely. Buy foods that you are allowed to have. Prepare yourself mentally before you start.  Know what you can and can not eat and have meals planned for at least your first week. Don't, however, let your planning go on endlessly and stop you from starting! 

~ Prepare all your own meals, at least at first.  If you work, bring things that you can have with you to work. Later, when you are more comfortable with what you can eat and your will-power is stronger, you can eat out and do fine. At first, be in charge of what you are eating all the time. 

~ Wait out cravings. All cravings will pass. If you can manage to wait it out, instead of beating yourself up for eating something that you can't have, you'll be praising yourself for not giving in.  The first time that you wait out a craving and don't cheat, you'll start to feel empowered and your self-esteem will go up.

~ Always have food that you can eat around.  If you let yourself get hungry and don't have things that you can eat close by, you'll give in and eat anything you can get your hands on. This goes back to planning - it's key to your success. 

~ Write down your goals EVERY DAY! It's so much easier to stick to something when you know what you are working towards.  Write them and look at them! 

~ Set small attainable goals and large goals! The large goal is where you want to end up eventually, and the small goals will help you along the way. 

~ Find someone to talk to. It's easier to do things when you have support. If you don't have anyone in your real life who you can turn to for support, find an online group where you can meet others who will support you on your journey. There are lots of support groups dedicated to the Atkins diet where you can find friends to help you on the way. 

~ Take it one day and one step at a time. Just like drug addicts and alcoholics have to take it one day at a time, you've got to do that with food. Don't tell yourself that you'll never eat something again, because it will feel too overwhelming.  But, if you tell yourself that you won't eat something today - or right now - it's easier to handle, mentally.  

~ Don't give up!! If you fall of the wagon while you are on the Atkins diet, don't stop. Brush yourself off and get right back on the wagon again.  Another quote that I love is, "Fall down seven times, get up eight."  You only fail when you stop trying!
