Activity Overview
See the story of America told through interactive displays of the science and history of textiles. The museum showcases textiles from the early centuries up to modern space craft era. The permanent collection focuses on the timeline of the development in fiber and textiles and also tackles the various forms of fabric: wool, nylon, cotton, and silk to name a few. Aside from more than 5 million pieces of fabric, the museum displays the world's largest collection of tools and machines such as hand looms and spinning wheels.
Things to Do
- Immerse in the Artifact Collection of textiles, clothing, and tools and machinery from the 18th century up to present. The displays range from blankets, coverlets, and floor coverings to clothing worn by the Americans from then until now. You can also sign up for a customized guided tour that focuses on specific areas of interest such as Textiles in America, Fashion, Art and Design,and Industrialization and Inventing in America.
- See the interesting pieces in the Current Exhibits. The museum usually changes the exhibit twice a year. Check the museum's website to know the running exhibit.
- Visit the Osborne Library for books, photographs and prints, and manuscripts related to the textile industry.
- Attend textile arts classes/workshops and lectures to get to know more about fabrics as well as basic sewing and embroidery. Check the schedule on the museum's website.
- Stay in the gazebo and order pizza along with tea or coffee from the A Family Affair Restaurant located in the museum's lobby.
