Activity Overview
This interesting science experiment about air flow challenges young scientists to try to blow a candle out while blowing through a wine bottle. While the wine bottle is the only likely object that you will have success with when you participate in this challenge, it is important to try this feat using the cereal box as well. Performing a couple of trials will help you better understand that the air that you blow at the bottle, travels around the bottle and directly toward the flame. Adult supervision is required for this experiment.
Materials Needed
- Wine bottle
- A candle ( we used a candlestick)
- A lighter or match
How To Do It
The Challenge
The challenge is to see if you can blow a candle out when there is an obstruction in the way. can you Blow through a cereal box to blow the candle out? How about a wine bottle? Try different objects and see what happens.
- Sit at a table and have an adult light a candlestick in a candle holder for you. Place the candle a few feet away from you.
- Take an object like a cereal box and stand it in line with the candlestick but a few inches away from the candlestick.
- Putting your mouth at the approximate level of the candle, blow hard at the box and see if you can blow the candle out. No luck?
- Now try the same steps but replacing the cereal box with a wine bottle. Amazing!
