Activity Overview

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph is a historic Roman Catholic cathedral and basilica in downtown San Jose. In 1803, the very first non-mission parish in California was built on this site, but it was damaged in earthquakes and had to be rebuilt numerous times throughout the 1800s. The current church on the site was constructed in 1877, and is one of the city's most famous architectural landmarks. In 1997, it was named a basilica by Pope John Paul II in recognition of its historic importance and beauty.

Things to Do

• View the cathedral's 39 stunning stained glass windows, most of which are over 130 years old. Several of the windows were made in Munich using a traditional method that dates back to the 11th century, while others were made in Italy.
• Check out the Odell Tracker pipe organ, one of only four of these impressive organs in the United States, which contains 40,000 wooden parts and 27 ranks of 60 pipes.
• Attend one of the many performances that make up the annual Season of Hope Concert Series, which features choral groups, symphony orchestras, harpists, and ballet dancers.

• You are welcome to walk around the church to admire its art and architecture, though you should make sure to be respectful of those who are praying or attending mass.
• There is no admission cost to visit the church, but donations are always appreciated.
• Parking near the cathedral can be quite difficult, so you should try to take public transportation if possible.
