Activity Overview

The Columbus Museum of Art in downtown Columbus, Ohio features an impressive collection of artwork including folk art, ancient American art, modern and contemporary art, photography, and pieces by famous European painters. It's the perfect place to introduce your child to the beauty of art and the diversity of foreign cultures due to its wide array of family programs and interactive displays. You can spend the day at the museum not just looking at art, but creating your own pieces too!

Things to Do

  • Explore The Wonder Room, a gallery filled with artwork and hands-on activities that is designed to inspire families to use their imagination and be creative. You and your child can play games, build trees out of cardboard, and even climb inside a treehouse!
  • Check out the Big Idea Gallery. It shows visitors how play is essential to the creation of art through activities that involve doing jigsaw puzzles, making sculptures, and creating things from clay.
  • View the collections - they feature pieces by famous artists such as Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Anthony van Dyck, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, and Norman Rockwell.

Columbus Museum of Art Insider Tips

  • Pick up a Family Tote Bag from the admissions desk. These handy bags are filled with activities like blocks, games, and puzzles that are designed to entertain children 5 and under during their museum visit.
  • Visit during the Open Study Saturdays event each Saturday between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., when visitors of all ages can do creative challenges with friends and family. Learn more about other family programs at the museum here.
  • If your child loves making art, consider having an art-filled birthday party at the Columbus Museum of Art! They offer a variety of party themes featuring robots, superheroes, dragons, and fairies that encourage children between the ages of 4 and 11 to create artwork and have fun while playing games.
