Activity Overview
Celebrate your family now and later by collecting favorite pieces of children's artwork, photos, letters, nostalgic objects and more. Preserve a moment in time and stow it away to be opened at a set date in the future.
Gather all family members together and include them all in their own special way. Everyone in the family can contribute to the time capsule in a way that is age appropriate for them to do so. Someone might want to write a poem, or add a handprint or footprint. Another idea would be for family members to write down a list of how much certain common items cost at the time such as a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk. Who are the world leaders at the present time or popular actors. What things happened that year both in your family and in the world?
Materials Needed
- A rubber bin with a lid
- family collaboration of items and ideas
How to Do It
- Gather family members together and describe what a time capsule is.
- Ask family members to brainstorm about some items and thoughts that they would like to include in the time capsule.
- Set to work on creating and finding items to add.
- Place items neatly in the bin and seal the lid on securely.
- Tape a note to the top of the bin and the side that says Do not open until _______said date_____.
- Stow the box away on a high shelf or in the attic stowed away where it will be out of sight and out of mind for a number of years.
- When that glorious date of opening arrives, gather again as a family years later and enjoy perusing through the family time capsule and reliving the memories together.
