Activity Overview
Create an I Spy Bottle for relaxing quiet time play for toddlers. We love the I Spy books and the picture books by Walter Wick, so we felt inspired to make our own artistic version of these popular themed books.
In this craft project, you will fill a clear plastic bottle with rice and small toys and objects and seal on the cap securely with glue. Young children can rotate and shake the bottle to find something new every time as the rice pours over and conceals some objects and reveals others. The sound of the rice pouring around the bottle is relaxing and pleasurable.
Try challenging each other to locate certain items that you know are in that bottle somewhere and rejoice in your discoveries. Young children will also get lots of practice in identifying and naming objects that are familiar to their world.
Materials Needed
- A clear plastic bottle with a cap
- Glue gun
- Dry uncooked rice
- Small objects and toys
- Funnel
How to Make It
- Remove any labels on your clear plastic bottle.
- Gather small objects that can fit through the mouth of your plastic bottle. They can be letters, a crayon, small car dice, small ball etc.
- Use a funnel to fill your bottle up 2/3 of the way with dry uncooked rice. Leave extra space in the bottle so that the rice can move around and uncover objects hidden in the bottle.
- Use a glue gun to secure the cap on the bottle.
