Activity Overview
If you are looking for a fun family friendly activity to play outside, consider an exciting and creative game of driveway golf. Driveway golf can be played on any kind of pavement, so if you have a driveway or a sidewalk this game can be easily created. The object of the game is to toss small stones along a paved golf course made of player designed chalk drawing hole destinations and to get the stones into the holes in the fewest number of strokes.
Players can get creative and design each of the holes with hazards or fun destinations and sketched out quickly. Some ideas include a hole set on an island surrounded by water or a large sand trap. Such designs create more of a challenge and keep the game interesting. The game evolves as you play each hole and actively involves all players in the game development and the play. This game is great for bus stops too!
Materials Needed
- Chalk
- Small stones or other small objects
- Sidewalk or driveway
How to Play
- Assign one person to draw the first golf hole with sidewalk chalk. Players should use your imaginations and come up with a creative themed hole that can be sketched out quickly and describe it to the group. The circular hole itself should be 3-4 inches wide.
- Create a starting line for the tee and have players take turns tossing their stones toward the hole.
- Just as in the game of golf, players should keep track of how many "strokes" or tosses that it takes for them to get their rock inside the hole. Players can tally their tosses on a sidewalk chalk score sheet on the pavement.
- If a player's stone lands in a trouble area like a sand trap, water or quicksand as is evident from the designed chalk drawing of the hole, the player has to move the stone back from the hazardous area and place their stone outside of the ares. This results in a one toss penalty on the score sheet.
- Once all players have accomplished the first hole, the next player gets a few moments to quickly sketch out a creative next hole in another spot nearby. Play continues in the same manner until all players get a turn creating holes or until the amount of holes of gold you plan to play are achieved.
- The player with the fewest tosses at the end of completing a full round of golf wins.
