Activity Overview
The goal of the game of Spoons is to try to get 4 of a kind and to be one of the first to grab a spoon. One person in each round will always be without a spoon, earning them one letter in the word S-P-O-O-N-S. The passing of cards should be done as quickly as possible.
A good strategy is to take a spoon in a sneaky manner when other players are least expecting it. You can also fake out other players by pretending to reach for a spoon but you cannot touch a spoon If a person mistakenly grabs or touches a spoon when no one has 4 of a kind, they are also assigned a letter in the word spoons.
Materials Needed
- A deck of cards
- Several spoons
How to Play
- Deal each player four cards.
- Stack the remaining cards in the center of all of the players.
- Also, place a spoon in the center to equal all but one of the number of players playing.
- To begin a game, the first player takes a card from the deck and places it into his hand. He or she decides whether to keep this card or not.
- He or she quickly discards one card from his or her hand and passes it, face down, to the next person in the circle.
- Once a person gets 4 of the same rank of card, he or she can grab a spoon from the center of the playing area.
- If anyone takes a spoon from the middle, the rest of the players can now grab a spoon, even if they don’t yet have four of a kind.
- The player who does not get a spoon in time is assigned the letter S.
- The player who stays in the game without spelling out SPOONS wins game.
