Activity Overview

The Georgia State Capitol is one of the most significant examples of architecture and history in both the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia. As a result of this significance, the building is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and recognized as a U.S. National Historic Monument.

The building was built on the site of the Atlanta City Hall in 1889. The building is in the same Classical style as the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C. In addition to the obvious political functions of the Georgia State Capitol, there are also tours available for visitors and the Georgia Capitol Museum, which is a great place for you and your family to learn more about the history of the building and the state.

Things to Do

  • Take a tour of the Georgia State Capitol building. The tours can either be guided or self guided.
  • Visit the Georgia Capitol Museum. In addition to information on the history of the building, the city, and the state, there are also art exhibits and collections of interesting artefacts.

Georgia State Capitol Insider Tips

  • Make sure to check the Georgia Capitol Museum's calendar for more information on events and to see if there is anything happening that you can't afford to miss!
  • Take the Fun with Miss Freedom! quiz along so your little ones can simultaneously have fun and learn while seeing the exhibits. A shorter family-friendly version is available here.
  • If you don't feel like completing either of the quizzes, why not do the scavenger hunt around the grounds of the capitol building.
