Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is so called due to the abundance of eastern hemlock trees which can be found here. These impressive trees are an interesting feature due to the fact that they are growing in a location that is hundreds of miles from their regular habitat. They are also remnants of the last Ice Age when great forests extended right across the Piedmont. Come to the Preserve to see this irregular vegetation and marvel at a unique system of flora and fauna. A visit here offers a break from it all along with the chance to learn about North Carolina's fascinating natural history.

• Your trip to the Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve should begin with a visit to the Stevens Nature Center. The Center provides almost 4000 square foot of space dedicated to exhibitions and classroom spaces to facilitate classes about the surrounding countryside. There is an outdoor education center which is similarly intended as a place to hold educational programs. Dropping in here will have you well prepared to make the most of your time at Hemlock Bluffs.
• A number of different trails are on offer to walkers at the Preserve. These vary in length and distance meaning that there are choices for those who are not so experienced or who may not be up to longer walks like children or the elderly. Each walk allows you to explore a fabulous area rich in natural diversity.
