Activity Overview

The Japanese Garden is located within the Washington Park in Portland, Oregon, and covers an area of 5.5 acres. The Japanese garden was opened for public viewing in 1967, and it is a traditional Japanese garden that encloses a natural garden, the flat garden, sand and stone garden, a strolling pond garden and a tea garden. It is the most beautiful and traditional style Japanese garden, it signifies Japanese culture, and the peaceful gardens neutralize the senses.

Things to Do

  • Stroll through the beautiful flat garden, it displays natural beauty in all four seasons. The cherry blossoms flower in early February and the spring, the Japanese lace leaf maple represents autumn.
  • The strolling pond garden is the most serene and beautiful place to visit, it features a moon bridge, a zig-zag bridge, this garden depicts a historic style of gardening. The natural garden features many deciduous plants, shrubs and maples.
  • The sand and stone garden is yet another traditional Japanese garden that features a dry landscaped garden, indigenous to the Zen Monastery in the 14th and 15th century.
  • The authentic Japanese tea house is located in the beautiful tea garden, there are mats on the floor and a sitting room where the tea ceremony is performed.
  • Families can take a guided tour, and children under 5 can tour for free.
  • Gift shop features handcrafted items by the local artisans.
  • Many cultural festivals, garden workshops and other events are held at the gardens, year-round.
