Activity Overview

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve aims to protect, preserve and establish outreach programs and exhibits about the cultural and natural resources of Louisiana and Mississippi River. The park is free of entry cost and consists of six separate sites that the public can explore by visiting. Families and children can learn a lot about the history and culture of Louisiana when they visit the park, other activities to enjoy are bird watching, wildlife watching including alligators, and exploring the plants of the Mississippi River Delta. The park is named after French-American Pirate of the 19th century, Jean Lafitte. The park and nature preserve is open all year round.

Things to Do

  • Visit the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve to learn about the history and culture of Louisiana. Plan a full day as there is so much to see and explore.
  • Visit the Chalmette battlefield in Chalmette, tour the site of the 1812 battle of New Orleans. The battle of New Orleans anniversary is commemorated with cannon firings and reenactments, each year.
  • Visit the french quarter visitor center and see exhibits and a film, learn the history and traditions of the city and the lower Mississippi delta. Buy videos, gifts, and children's books from the visitor center's store.
  • Visit the 23,000 acres of Barataria preserve that let you explore Louisiana's wild wetlands, the natural habitat includes swamps, bayous, marshes, forests with alligators, turtles, snakes and a variety of birds.
  • Guided walks of the wetlands are available. Walking trails and boardwalk take you through the preserve. Shop for music, books, souvenirs and more from the preserve's visitor center store.
  • Acadian culture center sheds light on the history of the early settlements of the Acadians in Louisiana. The center features exhibits and films, and a junior ranger program for the kids.
