Getting kids to finish their meals can be a struggle, especially when you're not around to cajole them into eating. And as a parent, you are responsible for teaching them good eating habits that they will carry with them for a lifetime. So why not start early by letting them decide what they want to eat...with some healthy guidelines, of course?
I created interactive menu cards for each of my kids that contain healthy choices for breakfast and lunch. Each day, they pick what they want to eat by selecting picture cards of their desired foods and placing them in the appropriate pockets in their menu cards. They love feeling in control of what's for breakfast and lunch, and I love knowing that they are learning how to make healthy, well-balanced menu choices. They are required to pick one card from each category in order to ensure that they are getting all the key nutrients they need. Best of all, they eat all their food because they got to pick it themselves, and using the cards is fun, too!
