Activity Overview
Learn all about the prehistoric creatures that roamed in the Missouri area at the Mastodon State Historic Site. This site is home to the Kimmswick bonebed which is the largest and most famous of all the ice age period fossils that were uncovered. Enjoy the walking trails and experience the history of those that walked the Earth millions of years before us.
Things to Do
- Enjoy a short and informative movie about the mastodon, the historic site, what was discovered here and how.
- Enjoy hiking on the several trails available at the park.
- Hike down the trail to visit the bone site where the first spear head of the Clovis Culture and mastodon remains were discovered.
- Enjoy the hands on exhibits and informative signage inside the museum. There is also a mastodon dinosaur on display. View artifacts from long ago discovered at this site.
- Enjoy the playground and picnic area.
Mastodon State Historic Site Insider Tips
- Admission to the park is $4 for adults. Children under the age of 12 are free.
- Have realistic expectations for this destination. The museum is small and you may spend about an hour seeing all there is to see...longer if you have a picnic in the picnic are. It is a nice and informative trip, but nothing fancy.
- The trail down to the bone bed might be difficult for those with physical limitations to handle. Remember that even if you can maneuver down, that you must also be able to make it back up.
