Activity Overview

Maymont Gardens are part of the historic 19th-century Maymont estate, the historic opulent mansion was constructed in 1893 by Mr. and Mrs. James H. Dooley. Maymont gardens attract tourists because of the beauty of green landscape and beautiful plants and flowers, there is an arboretum and specialty gardens. The gardens are free to tour. The Dooley's named the mansion May Mont, Mont means hill in French. The historic mansion can be toured Tuesday through Sunday. The estate is comprised of many historic buildings and a carriage collection.

Things to Do

  • Visit the beautiful mansion and the gardens, you can start your self-guided tour from the visitor center. There is a wildlife exhibit and a children's farm at the center.
  • The Maymont estate is home to plenty of wildlife, including black bears, children can see livestock like goats grazing on the pastures.
  • Children can feed animals at the farm, like cows, goats, chicken, ducks, horses, sheep and more.
  • The nature center houses many animals, including alligators, crabs, fish, river otters, sea horses, turtles and snakes.
  • The gardens are open daily and constitute of a beautiful Japanese garden, Italian garden, and an arboretum.
  • The gardens have expansive lawns with rock formations, gazebos, bridges, streams and walkways and more.
  • Family scavenger hunt is a fun way to explore the estate. Families can have a picnic in the estate's grounds.
