Activity Overview
McConnell Springs has a historic significance, this is the site where Lexington was named, it is a 26-acre nature area and an important historic site. Explore serene and beautiful springs, vegetation and historic sites as you take a hike through one and a half miles of hiking trails. Explore natural beauty of the site, wide species of plants and birds, and other animals. McConnell Springs was setup by William McConnell in 1775. The education center and trails are open to visitors all year round, generally from 9AM to 5PM.
Things to Do
- Many family friendly activities are offered at McConnell springs park, the site is a national historic site and has been location of a mill, a gunpowder factory and a dairy farm.
- Take a hike and explore natural springs, the "Blue hole spring" that has a blue color and "the Boils" that looks like a boiling spring.
- Locate the stone fences of a dairy farm that was built in the 1920's. Spot the large bur oak tree that is almost 250 years old.
- During the spring, you can spot raccoons, opossums and squirrels in the nature park.
- The visitor center has plenty of exhibits to engage the kids.
- An annual event is celebrated in May, it celebrates Lexington's official birthday. The festival offers activities that the whole family can enjoy including music and dance, historic reenactments, and food.
