Activity Overview
Roanoke Virginia's claim to fame is the roadside attraction of the Mill Mountain Star, also known as the Roanoke Star that is displayed at the top of Mill Mountain. The Mill Mountain Star stands 88 1/2 feet tall and is the largest man made, free standing star in the United States. It was thought up by local merchants in the town in 1949 when store owners wanted to boost sales to start off the holiday shopping season.
Originally, it was lit up in white lights and became a popular tourist attraction, so they decided to leave it up and it has been there ever since, though the lighting was changed to red white and blue in 1976 to commemorate the Nation's Bicentennial Celebration. The park itself offers amazing hiking trails and scenic overlooks.
