If you and your family love nature and feel like getting out of the house, you should consider heading along to the Morgan-Monroe State Forest. Getting to the forest from Indianapolis should take around an hour if you head along at a reasonable time and manage to avoid any traffic.

The forest is the second largest state forest in Indiana and the area has been preserved by the state since its establishment way back in 1929. Today the forest serves as a great place for families to enjoy nature in the area. This massive state forest covers around 24,000 acres of land.

Things to Do

• Save money and take some food along to the park and have a picnic. There are picnic grounds and picnic shelters that can be used during the day.
• Go fishing at one of the three lakes in Morgan-Monroe State Forest. Two of the lakes feature boat ramps and can be fished on by anyone with a valid fishing license. Swimming, however, is not permitted in any of the lakes here.
• Stretch your legs and go for a hike on any of the many hiking trails. The trails are clearly marked so that visitors won't get lost!

• Hunting also takes place in the forest so make sure you're wearing the appropriate blaze orange colors if you decide to head along during hunting season.
