Activity Overview

The Mt. Tallac Trail can be accessed from highway 89 at the South Lake Tahoe, the trail is moderate to strenuous hiking trail that gives pleasant views of the Lake Tahoe, fallen leaf lake, Cathedral lake and the surrounding forest. Mount Tallac Trail requires strenuous hike, so it is not advised for everyone. The trail is well marked due to its heavy use and is open for hiking May through September. The hiking trail takes you to the front face of the Mount Tallac.

Things to Do

  • The trail should be hiked by novice hikers, hikers must get themselves a wilderness permit that is available at the trail head.
  • The trail is 8-9 miles of round trip, and it can get steep and strenuous at various points.
  • The trail is at an elevation of 9,735 feet, the trail gives unmatched views of the Sierra mountains, forest, lake Tahoe, meadows and other lakes.
  • You'll hike through lush forests, meadows, wildflowers, big rocks, streams, and can spot wildlife too.
  • The trail is very populated in the Summer season, start out early in the day as parts of the trail can become very hot and dusty.
  • You must wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water. You have to pay for the parking.

  • Wear nicely fitted shoes and use bug spray.
  • No restrooms on the trail head.
