Activity Overview

Through the Museum of Work and Culture, experience the lives of the men, women and children who migrated from the farms of Quebec to the mill town of Woonsocket, Rhode Island from the late 1800's to 1900's in hope of a better future.

Study a host of multimedia, interactive displays to learn how these individuals along with additional ethnic groups of migrants preserved their culture and worked toward assimilating into American life.

Photographs, films, audio, and tactile exhibits showcase the trials, tribulations and feats of the working class of New England over the past hundred plus years.

Things to Do

  • Inspect a pre-industrial era Quebecois farmhouse and the shop floor of an old textile mill.
  • Follow Woonsocket workers of yesteryear through their typical workday.
  • Listen to the stories of immigrants while sitting on the front porch of a triple decker, in a 1920's classroom or in a mock Independent Textile Union Hall from the 1930's.
