Activity Overview
Musical Hoops also played as musical rugs is one of my favorite games for kids. The game of Musical Hoops is based on the game of Musical Chairs but with a more pleasant and friendly twist.
In this game, players are not considered out when the music stops and they can't find a hoop. Instead, a hoop is removed from the ground after each round and the players have to find a way to share the available hoops. Depending on how many people are playing, this can require some innovative thinking.
Musical Hoops is fantastic for parties and picnics! Consider leading with basic moves like running, dancing, galloping, skipping or even some fancier activities like pretending to be certain animals until the music stops.
Materials Needed
- Several Hula Hoops
- 4 or more players
How to Play
- Hula Hoops should be placed on the grass or floor if the area is large enough.
- The players should follow the instructions of the leader and get active to the music.
- The leader should allow the active play to go on for a stint and then stop the music.
- Players need to find a hoop to stand or sit in in a safe manner. In the first round there should be enough for every one or two to have one.
- After each round, the leader should take one hoop away when the music stops. With fewer hoops, the players will need to learn to share the hoop in a cooperative manner. This is cool to watch unfold.
- Play continues until there is only one hoop. Players should have gotten savvy enough to make it work. The only rule is that somehow, each player must have a body part inside of the hoop.
