If you're looking to get back to the great outdoors with your family, you should make the 30-minute journey south of Birmingham, Alabama, to the Oak Mountain State Park. The largest state park in Alabama covers nearly 10,000 acres of land and is home to plenty of different activities for adults and children alike.
Since 1927, the area covered by the park has been regularly expanded from a modest 940 acres to the size it is today with the addition of many facilities along the way.
Things to Do
- Stretch your legs as you and your family embark on a hike along any of the park's wonderful hiking trails. There are over 50 miles of trails throughout the park and going for a hike is one of the park's most popular activities.
- If you feel like going quicker than walking, consider taking mountain bikes along for the ride! Mountain biking around the park is recommended as one of the best things to do there.
- There are basketball courts if you feel like shooting some hoops at the park.
- The Oak Mountain State Park features a lake which is home to plenty of different aquatic activites. Whether you feel like hanging out on the beach, going for a swim, taking in a spot of fishing, or just having a picnic, there are tons of things to keep every member of the family entertained.
