Activity Overview

The Ohio History Center is the headquarters of the Ohio History Connection, an organization which runs historical sites throughout the state of Ohio. It is home to a museum full of fascinating exhibits, the state historic preservation office, and the Ohio Village, a living history museum that gives visitors a unique look at life in Ohio during the Civil War. If you're interested in learning about the history of Ohio, then the Ohio History Center is the perfect place to spend the day with your family.

Things to Do

  • Explore the museum! You can learn all about Ohio's history from prehistoric times to the present by viewing its detailed exhibitions, including a special interactive exhibit on the 1950s featuring a full-size house filled with fascinating artifacts.
  • Learn about nature while exploring The Nature of Ohio, an exhibit that focuses on plants, animals, climate, geography, and geology. Children love the giant Conway mastodon skeleton that welcomes you into the gallery!
  • In the summertime, visit the Ohio Village - it features 22 buildings that include a town hall, a blacksmith shop, a cabinetmaker's shop, a village bakery, and a schoolhouse. It is open each year between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Ohio History Center Insider Tips

  • Check out their Programs and Events page to learn about family-friendly activities like museum programs, Ohio Village festivals, workshops, and special tours.
  • If you have a Girl Scout in the family, consider participating in one of the museum's many Girl Scout programs, including exciting history-themed overnights at the Ohio History Center for Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes.
  • For a truly memorable experience, consider going on one of the Gossip Tours of the Ohio Village! You'll hear all sorts of entertaining stories from a village resident such as the livery owner or the Irish handyman as they show you around the town.
