Activity Overview

Oldfields is a 26-acre historic estate on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art which features a beautiful historic house and gardens. The centerpiece of the estate is the Lilly House, a 22-room mansion built in the early 1900s that was the home of J.K. Lilly Jr., a prominent local businessman. However, the site is also known for its expansive gardens, which were designed by famous landscaper Percival Gallagher. Once you're done viewing the house and the gardens, your family should certainly take some time to explore the museum's art collections as well.

Things to Do

• Go on a tour of the Lilly House, which allows visitors to see its beautiful circular staircase, great hall, game room, library, drawing room with exquisite hand-painted Chinese wallpaper, dining room, and large kitchen.
• Explore the serene gardens, which were designed to make Oldfields the quintessential American country estate. Highlights include the beautiful Ravine Garden and the tree-lined Allée.
• Sit and enjoy nature in the colorful Four Seasons Garden, which is known for its circular pool and artisan sundial as well as its flower displays.

Oldfields Insider Tips

• Take a guided tour of the gardens! Public tours are offered at 1 p.m. on weekends from April through October. You can also pick up an audio tour from the Lilly House Guest Services Desk if you prefer to take a self-guided tour.
• Both the gardens and the Lilly House are included in general admission to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, so you should take advantage of the opportunity to explore the museum as well.
• Save money by visiting on the first Thursday of each month between 4 and 9 p.m. when the museum offers free admission, or one of the many free days throughout the year.
