Activity Overview

Portland Children's Museum provides, fun, education, thrill and excitement to children of all ages. Children can play with and touch objects at the museum, the various hands-on interactive exhibits encourage children to research and explore. The museum was founded by Dorothea Lensch in 1946, located at the Washington park, the museum is one of the six oldest children's museums in the country.

Things to Do

  • Families can have a great recreation at the museum, the newest permanent exhibit is the "Outdoor adventure", in which the 1.3 acres of land around the museum has been transformed into an outdoor play space.
  • The outdoor adventure features the toddler area, with sandpits and water spouts, the campsite, the creek, a trail for hiking, an amphitheater, pavilion for picnic, and so much more.
  • The museum features many permanent and traveling exhibits, including, building bridge town, where kids can get to learn and do their own home improvement tasks, the clay studio, where kids can work and play with clay.
  • The garage, kid-sized carts and grocery shopping at the grasshopper grocery, and children can care for pets at the pet hospital.
  • Children can listen to and read stories in the tree house adventure, perform arts at play it again theater, children can drive toy cars, buses and trains, and can enjoy exhibits like twilight trails and water works.
  • The museum can be rented for children's birthday parties.
  • Enjoy a magical exhibit, 'the wizard of oz" that will be featured till January, 2015, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the film. The exhibit features the Gale farm, Munchkin land, crossroads, witch's castle and the emerald city.
  • Museum cafe, the counter serves a variety of salads, soups, sandwiches, with both kids and adult menu options.
  • Day camps and seasonal events for children are held at the museum.
