Activity Overview

Seeing the Rainbow Row, one of the most iconic areas in Charleston and the longest row of Georgian houses in the country, is one of the activities that you can enjoy for free while just walking around town. Rainbow Row started when Judge Legge and his wife bought a house on the East Bay Street and painted the exterior pastel pink. Their neighbors followed suit. This is the reason why this street is a sight to see, with all 14 houses painted in different bright pastel colors.

Things to Do

  • Either book a historic tour of Charleston or go on a DIY walking tour with your family. Don't forget to bring your camera to take photos of the row houses and of your family with the rainbow-colored background.
  • If you plan to do a DIY walking trip, research the history of the place. You'll find many versions as to why the houses differ in color. It will be a great story to tell the entire family.
  • If you prefer riding, tour organizers offer carriage rides that go to various neighborhoods including Rainbow Row.
  • Rainbow Row is included as a stop in a 2-hr free walking tour along with other attractions in the area such as Charleston City Market, Fort Sumter, and the Old Exchange Building.

Rainbow Row Insider Tips

  • It only takes a couple of minutes to visit this site unless you'll take time in taking photos. Add this as a stop to your itinerary.
