Share:

Activity Overview

Create these entertaining Rolled Paper Spinning Tops to keep kids of all ages entertained. This is a great way to recycle those old newspapers and magazine and put them to better use. This project takes some patience to cut and glue the strips of paper in place, it is well worth time and patience.

Spin your tops independently or have Spinner Battles where the last spinning top standing is the winner. The spinners work best on a clean flat surface.

Materials Needed

  • Magazines or newspaper
  • Scissors
  • Toothpicks
  • Glue stick

How to Make It

  1. Cut newspaper or magazine pages into 1/2-3/4 inch even strips.
  2. Take each strip and glue them to each other end to end to form a very long continuous strand of paper. Do not use too much glue. A glue stick will work nicely and dry fairly quickly.
  3. Next, glue one end of the long paper strip 2/3 of the way down the toothpick.
  4. Carefully, roll the paper tightly around the toothpick, keeping the roll as taut as you can as you roll.
  5. Glue the final end to seal the tightly wrapped roll.
  6. Leave as is or adjust your paper roll into a cone shape.
  7. Hold onto the top edge of the toothpick and spin!
