Create your own version of a slide trombone in 3 simple steps and materials that you most likely have on hand at home. This is a quick and easy experiment in sound that will have kids tooting their own horns in minutes. Budding scientists will discover that the pitch of the sound that they create changes as they move the straw because they are lengthening the section of air in the straw. This mimics the manner in which a slide trombone functions.
Materials Needed
- Empty Soda bottle
- Straw
- Water
How to Make It
- Fill the soda bottle with water until it about 2/3 full.
- Place the straw in the bottle and blow across the top of the straw
- To make changes to the sound that you hear, raise the straw and lower it as you blow.
