The Southern Museum of Flight is a fantastic aviation museum in Birmingham, Alabama. For over 50 years the museum has provided fascinating exhibits and information on aviation for residents and visitors alike. If you or your little ones are obsessed with aircraft, this is certainly the destination for a fun-filled family day out!
The museum can be found just 10 minutes to the northeast of downtown Birmingham just a few blocks from the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.
Things to Do
- Pay homage to Alabama's aviation history at the Tuskegee Airmen Exhibit.
- Enjoy a tribute to the 16th Cavalry Regiment's Troop C and all those who served in Vietnam War at the Vietnam War Helicopters Exhibit.
- Witness the Lake Murray B-25 which was discovered after 62 years at the bottom of Lake Murray. During the Second World War, the USAAF used to carry out training exercises at Lake Murray.
- See an incredible example of two key fighter jets that were used during the Korean War: the F-86 Sabre and the MiG-15. The aircraft are presented in a diorama depicting the defection of a North Korean Lieutenant.
- Make sure to head outside when the weather's nice in order to appreciate the museum's wonderful outdoor collection that includes the A-12 Blackbird, a reconnaissance aircraft built for the CIA during the 1960s.
- Learn all about aviation through the museum's fine collection of interesting artifacts, paintings, and photographs that tell the story of aviation in the area over the years.
