Activity Overview
Family members of all ages will enjoy the Southworth Planetarium located in the Science Building on the University of Southern Maine's Portland Campus.
Attend one of the omnidome shows offered at the facility, such as "Eight Planets," "Dinosaurs at Dusk," "Rusty Rocket," or "The Little Star That Could."
Things to Do
While waiting for your show, learn interesting facts about outer space from the large photographs of planets found on the planetarium's walls.
Check the calendar for lectures on any number of scientific topics such as astronomy, weather and the night sky.
- If visiting during school vacation weeks, attend a laser show.
Southworth Planetarium Insider Tips
- Omnidome shows take place during the school year Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m., Fridays at 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00 p.m.
- During summer vacation, shows take place at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m, Monday through Thursday.
- There is no Sunday show during the months of June, July and August.
- Free parking available in a nearby garage on Bedford Street.
