Activity Overview
Located just north of San Francisco on the scenic Highway One Stinson Beach is a great place to spend a relaxing day by the sea. At only 20 miles distance from San Francisco it is the perfect choice for a day trip and is also well situated to explore other sites nearby.
Things to Do
- Consider making a day of it by bringing along food for a picnic. If eating on the sand does not appeal to you then you can head to the fifty one acre park adjacent to the beach where there are over one hundred picnic tables to snack on.
- Use the beach as a base to see other sites in the surrounding area. From Stinson Beach you can easily reach the Point Reyes Lighthouse, the Bolinas Lagoon Preserve, the Mt. Tamalpais State Park, Muir Woods, Red Rock Beach and the Marin Headlands.
- If you want to do something a little more active than just sunbathe there are plenty of options. Numerous surf shops around and on the beach offer surfboard and kayak rentals. There are volleyball nets along the beach which you can use. There are many hiking trails around the beach and you can beachcomb too!
- The beach is 3.5 miles long which means you shouldn't have any problems finding a spot for your family's towels!
Stinson Beach Insider Tips
- Dogs are only allowed into the park area if they are on a leash. They may not enter the public beach area.
- You can rest easier for the safety of your children from May until October when lifeguards are on duty.
- The Beach closes at sunset and it is not possible to camp. There are also no RV Parks. If you want to stay for a night or more you can find lodging at The Sandpiper Inn.
