Link Missing-Error  The sixth photo shown (with the grocery shelves and the green plate on the wall) is not a photo of the Children's Museum of Virginia. It is actually of the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry, located in Charleston, SC. Can you please remove it from this review? Thanks!

Activity Overview

The Children's Museum of Virginia is located in Portsmouth and is the largest children's museum in the commonwealth. This fun and exciting museum has hands on interactive displays for children of all ages. It is a well run, very clean and well maintained place with the mission of promoting learning through play and hands on fun.

Things to Do

  • One of the most popular exhibits is the antique toy and model train collection which is the largest collection of its kind on the East Coast.
  • Experience the magic of the Bubble room where you can create bubbles, pop bubbles, observe bubbles and even stand inside one!
  • Enjoy the wonders of space with a show in the state of the art planetarium.
  • The museum shop is a sight to see in and of itself. It has an incredible variety of fun, educational and unique toys. Good to peruse with the kids even if it is just to get some really great future gift ideas.
  • Operate kids sized ship yard cranes, pretend to put out fires, go fishing in a boat, and more
  • Birthday parties

The Children's Museum of Virginia Insider Tips

  • Consider the membership pass if you plan to attend the museum more than two times a year.
  • The first floor offers more play type exhibits and the second floor features more of your science displays.
  • This museum is closed on Mondays unless it is a day off from school.
  • Weekends tend to get busy as they do in most children's museums, so I would suggest arriving earlier on those days.
  • This museum is stroller friendly and has family bathroom for convenience.
