Activity Overview

For those in the San Diego area, the Torrey Pines State Beach is a great destination for families with children of all ages. There are a number of things to do on the beach and there are amazing views, making Torrey Pines State Beach one of the most beautiful sights in the region.

Things to Do

  • Do you love surfing? The Torrey Pines State Beach is a very popular destination amongst surfers. The north side of the beach is where you need to go if you and your family want to ride the waves.
  • Do you prefer swimming or body boarding over surfing? The south side of the beach is the body boarding section.
  • Walk along the beach and the trails. The views offered over the Torrey Pines State Beach are second to none thanks to the process of coastal erosion that shaped the land and there are two trails that walkers and hikers can take advantage of.
  • Take a guided nature tour around the park. The tours are available on Saturdays and Sundays and can be arranged by calling ahead. The telephone number can be found here.

Torrey Pines State Beach Insider Tips

  • Check for the red and yellow flag marking the boundary between the surfing and body boarding sections of the beach as it is moved depending on the time of the day. The last thing you'd want is for you or a member of your family to end up in danger because you went to the wrong part of the ocean!
  • Staying on the beach? Head along early for a quieter experience. Usually only the surfers and body boarders head along to the beach in the morning and this means you'll find that parking is a lot simpler at this time of the day.
  • The beach does not allow dogs. This means that you'll have to leave your furry friends at home.
  • Avoid swimming if you are a weak swimmer. The reason the beach is a popular destination for surfing is due to the height of some of the waves. The currents can also be strong and there are not always life guards on duty.
  • Keep an eye out for dolphins and whales. They have been known to pop up from time to time!
