Looking for a wonderful nature spot to hike in Tucson? Tumamoc Hill gives you great hiking experience in the Tucson Downtown area, there is plenty of desert vegetation and wildlife to see on your way, as well as the giant Cactus; Saguaro. The hill got its name from a giant horned lizard of the desert. The nature preserve is maintained by the University of Arizona. Tumamoc Hill is an ecological preserve and a landmark and the hill has an elevation of about 700 feet. There is a paved road for hiking, open all year round to nature lovers and hikers. Visitors of all ages can enjoy the hike up the hill.

Things to Do

  • Enjoy a hike to the top of the Tumamoc hill, the road is paved and sloped at many intervals, it's a bit steep hike, giving you a good cardio work out.
  • The hike is about 1.5 miles to the top, at the top of the hill you can see many radio and television transmitters, and public safety transmitters.
  • The top of the hill gives spectacular views of the Tucson city. You can only hike after 5.30 PM Monday through Friday, because the road is used for traffic.
  • Be mindful, you can see rattlesnakes as you hike up, deer, coyotes and plants like saguaro, and other plants.
  • The best season to hike the hill is October through April.
  • You must bring water bottles with you, and energy bars.
  • Wear good walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat.
