Activity Overview
The coast of Virginia is divided into three distinct areas: Virginia Beach Oceanfront, Sandbridge, and Chesapeake Bay Beach. Choose to stay in the one area that suits your family's vacation plan or visit all three beach locations and explore all of what the city has to offer.
Things to Do
- Head on to Virginia Beach Oceanfront where all the action is. Umbrellas and chairs are available for rent if you wish to relax away from the sun's glare. Take your kids and sign up for a boat tour. If you're lucky, you might just spot dolphins.
- The boardwalk at the Oceanfront is too beautiful to miss. Stroll, bike, or skateboard your way on the three-mile boardwalk. Watch free music performances and grab a refreshing drink as you go along. The boardwalk is open 24/7 and police patrols the area regularly. If the kids are still a bundle of energy at night, bring your flashlights and go ghost crab hunting near the boardwalk.
- Visit Cape Henry Lighthouse at the Chesapeake Bay and see sweeping views of the bay. Waves are smaller on this side of the coast and children can have more fun body surfing. For a more outdoorsy experience, take your family to the First Landing State Park and rent a cabin. Aside from beach access, the park also has hiking and biking trails.
- For a more serene beach experience, go further down south to Sandbridge beach. Swim in the Atlantic or explore the marsh area. The backside of Sandbridge is ideal for birdwatching, kayaking, and fishing.
Virginia Beach Insider Tips
- Check the heat index before going to Cape Henry Lighthouse. If the heat index reaches 105 degrees, they will not allow guests to climb to the top floor.
