Activity Overview
Any families looking for something to do on a nice day in the Twin Cities should think about heading along to the Water Power Park by the Saint Anthony Falls in the northeast of Minneapolis. While the name may seem a bit odd, it's actually due to the Hennepin Island Hydrolectric Plant which was first built towards the end of the 19th century. The plant provided power to the various mills and today is one of the recognized structures that make up the Saint Anthony Falls Historic District.
This part of the city has a fascinating history. Originally the site was considered by the Native Americans to be an area of immense spiritual power before logging and mills peppered the banks of the Mississippi in order to harness the power from the flow of the river. The area started as a site of considerable natural beauty before becoming industralized and finally returning to nature with the construction of this park.
