Activity Overview

West Baton Rouge Museum is home to cultural and historical artifacts, documents, and art collections showing the roots of Baton Rouge. Permanent exhibits include the display of earliest architectural designs in the area represented by houses, plantation cabins, and a sugar mill model. There's something to see and learn for all ages.

Things to Do

  • Learn more about sugar mills, production, and its importance to the state of Louisiana. Watch a short clip explaining the different stages of sugar processing. See the machineries needed for sugar production at the Cinclaire plantations.
  • Visit the Allendale Plantation cabins and get a feel of a plantation worker's house from the 1850s up to the 1890s.
  • Get to see the French-Creole architectural style as represented by the Aillet House. Inside the house, you will also find original furnishings from the 1830s.
  • The museum offers S is for Sugar, a field trip designed for kids ages 3-6 years old complete with puppets, games, and exercises. Call the museum for inquiries and reservations..
  • Check out the Current Exhibits. The museum has a changing display ranging from music shows, students' art competitions, and American Civil War special exhibits.
